An early message on day 8

as it turned out last night, not every day is easy. Since my current immune system is currently almost completely broken down, this naturally poses risks. I have said before that there is a great team ready and that was also shown last night!

Around midnight I started to get a little warm and as discussed earlier with the medical team. Is it good to shake the bell immediately with shivers and heat (or possible signs of fever). Although I still felt pretty good, I thought it would be wise to do this.

After calling the sister, some checks were carried out immediately and it turned out that my temperature was indeed somewhat raised (37,7). Sounds not particularly high to me, but in the current situation I am more standard around 36,5, so it was a bit on the high side for now.

An extra infusion line was immediately installed and I was treated with electrolytes and antibiotics to control the temperature and resolve any infections. Since the medication can make you drowsy and unstable, a catheter was also inserted for the night to make sure I didn't have to get out of bed to go to the toilet. Not very pleasant to place, but yes… Not being able to go to the toilet is not an option uncle haha.

After the infusion the temperature had dropped nicely to 36,5 and I could go to sleep. Also the blood pressure was fine! Another fine example of care for the team, which I am very happy with! I have never been worried during this whole event and I am more impressed every day by the good care… If you ask me, Dutch hospitals can really learn something from this…

Oh yes, the catheter will soon be removed again and luckily it was only for the night, so that is solved again!

Update: also the values of this day:

Greetings, Stephan

    Good morning honey,
Gosh that is scared and I'm so glad you're in good hands there, unbelievable how quickly they respond and I think they can't match this idd here, I'm glad you went to this hospital.
The leukocytes will now be at 0 and you can rebuild, I am also happy that you continue to eat well because you really need that.
Waiting for the results again today, but that will certainly be fine and you will start building, I have 1 question what are electrolytes?
Thank you very much for the update.
A lot of strength and we look forward to the results.
Big boy and lots of love from Henk and Lenie.

    • Hi Henk and Lenie! Was a shock indeed, but due to the good care I felt completely safe at all times.

Good question about the electrolytes! Electrolytes in the blood is somewhat the collective name for various 'blood salts'. These dissolved salts in the watery part of the blood ensure the transport of nutrients and waste products to and from the cells. They are important for the water balance and the maintenance of the correct acidity (pH). The main electrolytes are sodium (Na +), potassium (K +), chloride (Cl-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-).

Still a pretty technical story so natural, but I hope it gives some insight into the importance of this! 🙂

      Love, Stephan

  • Hi Stephen,
A pity you had some set backs last nite. Fortunately
you are under excellent professional care. That
alone gives you some peace of mind that you can trust the medical staff. But I am impressed with
your attitude and your desire to get to the finish
line and fight this challenge. I will keep in touch
    with love and concern. Tanti
